You mentioned, incidentally, in the final paragraph of your letter of 1 August, that the Dutch and French Governments had expressed willingness to accept some of the refugees, and that the Australian Government would be prepared to consider granting asylum to a number of them. I have accordingly had detailed enquiries made in these countries. I am informed that none of the Governments concerned made any offer to accept any of these people. Whilst I am genuinely anxious to do whatever I can to help, I am afraid I must therefore repeat that the difficulties of assisting people such as these are only increased by unsupported allegations, especially when they are also released to the press as facts.
Yours - somerely,
Formue, Roberts!
