All the 11 journalists also pleaded guilty to the charge of entering the restricted area. All had convictions recorded against them and each was sentenced to a fine of HK$ 200 (about £16). They have given notice of appeal against the sentence. No date for the hearing of this appeal has yet been set.

It was kind of you to send me a copy of the letter you received from the South Vietnamese Ambassador about the conditions under which the group were held on Con Son Island. As I said in my previous letter, we now have a number of assurances from the South Vietnamese Government about the treatment of the group. The important thing is that these assurances should be kept. We have impressed on the South Vietnamese Government the extent to which HMG's general attitude will be influenced by their actions.
