Increments of salary, if any, will be payable from the officer's incremental date which is determined, in accordance with his date of first appointment, as follows:-

(a) If he assumes duty in Hong Kong between 1st and the 15th of the month,

his incremental date will be the 1st of that month.

(b) If he assumes duty in Hong Kong between the 16th and the end of the month, his incremental date will be the 1st of the following month.

An increment will be granted only if an officer's conduct (including fidelity, obedience to orders, propriety) and diligence (meaning steady application, attentiveness to duties and industry) have been satisfactory during the preceding

year.

SALARY

(1) (a) For officers on first appointment

Half salary will be paid for the period of the direct unbroken air journey from the country of engagement to Hong Kong. The period of any such journey shall be reckoned as commencing on the day of departure and ending on the day previous to the date of arrival in Hong Kong. Full salary will be paid from the date of arrival in Hong Kong.

(b) For officers on re-engagement

Full salary will be payable during the subsequent tour of service from the day following the date on which the period of vacation leave granted in respect of the officer's previous tour of duty concludes and also during any leave granted in respect of the subsequent tour of service.

(c) For officers appointed locally

Full salary will be paid from the date of assumption of duty in Hong Kong.

Salaries are payable in local currency, i.e. Hong Kong dollars and are paid monthly in arrear.

Emoluments received in Hong Kong are subject to local taxation.

(iv) The salary of an officer is liable to deductions under Sections 5; 7; 8; 15; 17;

and 26

ADVANCE OF SALARY ON FIRST APPOINTMENT

All officers on first appointment to Hong Kong who are selected from outside Hong Kong (i.e. not engaged locally) may, in accordance with Hong Kong Establishment Regulations, receive an advance of salary, in a round sum, not exceeding half of one month's salary and an interest-free advance of salary of HK$960 as a means of assistance towards the purchase of essential kit. The former advance will normally be recovered in three equal monthly instalments commencing from the month following that in which the advance is made. The latter advance is to be repaid within 12 months of the officer's arrival in the Colony. Applications for both advances should be made in writing to the Crown Agents in the United Kingdom, or in other countries to the authority who acts on behalf of the Hong Kong Government; this is normally the Government in a Colonial country, the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in other Commonwealth countries and Her Majesty's Consul or
