I was appointed a Probationary Inspector of the Hongkong Police Force in December 1961 and arrived in the Colony in January 1962. On completing six months' training at the Police Training School I passed out, being awarded the Baton of Honour for my being adjudged the best all- round recruit inspector of my course.

On 14 July 1962 I was posted to Hunghom Division, Kowloon. There I was assigned mainly to the general duties of a Uniform Branch patrol inspector, working mainly in Hunghom Sub-Division. My Divisional Commander wa

In Hunghom Police Station I occupied, with MR J.G.HURST, Probationary Inspector, who had passed out with me, the single-inspectors' quarters. These comprised a hall, lounge, kitchen and bathroom, and two bedrooms. They were situated above the station Report Room and the office of the Divisional Superintendent.

Upon my taking residence at Hunghom Station, the station bootblack, a Chinese who I recall was known to me as

was assigned to serve me, to clean my equipment and to run errands. As I have been told, such servants were employed on the recommendation of the Barrack Corporal or the Uniform Branch Staff Sergeant, and were issued with station security passes by the Divisional Chief Inspector.
