I have received the attached letter from Mr Tilton. He wrote to me before, when your Commission was first being set up. On that occasion I passed his letter to John Prendergast, who happened to be in this country, saying that, if he wished to, he might contact Mr Tilton direct. I do not know whether he did so, but from Mr Tilton's present letter it seems unlikely.

I have no idea of Mr Tilton's standing, but from his own account it does seem as if he is widely experienced. possibly he has nothing to contribute that would be of value to you; but if you had time while on leave to drop him a note to say that I have passed the letter to you and that you have found it interesting and valuable, this might, at the very least, bring a glow to a retired officer who is clearly living in his past. who knows, he might even be of use to you!
And,
Anyway, perhaps we could have a word about Mr Tilton's letter at your leisure. Meanwhile I have not replied to him.
