A. D. 1793.
Pounds per Annum, fhall be conferred upon or granted to any of the said Servants who shall not have been ac- tually refident in India as a Covenanted Servant of the faid Company for the Space of three Years at the lea in the Whole, antecedent to fuch Vacancy; and if the Salary, Perquifites, and Emoluments of any Once, Place, or Employment, fhall exceed one thousand five hundred l'ounds per Annum, the fame fuail not be granted to or conferred upon any of the faid Servants who fhall not have been actually refident in India in the faid Service for the Space of fix Years at the leaft in the Whole, antecedent to such Vacancy; and if the Sa- lary, Perquifites, and Emoluments of any Office, Place, or Employment, fhall exceed three thousand Pounds per Annum, the fame fhall not be granted to or conferred upon any of the faid Servants who fhall not have been actually refident in India in the faid Company's Service for the Space of nine Years at the leaft in the Whole; and if the Salary, Perquifites, and Emoluments of any Office, Place, or Employment, fhall ex- ceed four thousand Pounds per Annum, the fame fhall not be granted to or conferred upon any of the faid Servants who fhall not have been actually resident in India in the Company's Service for the Space of twelve Years at the leaft in the Whole, antecedent to fuch Vacancy; and that all Appointinents, Advancements, and Promotions, which. fhall be made for fupplying any fuch Vacancies, other than as aforefaid, fhall be null and void.
LVIII. And be it further enacted, That no Perfon fhall for the future be capable of taking, in the Civil hold two Officer, Line of the Company's Service, two or more Offices, Places, or Employments, the joint Amount of the Salaries, Perquifites, and Emoluments of which fhall exceed in the Whole the Annual Salary, Perquifites, and Emoluments respectively herein-before in that Behalf preferibed, any Law or Ufage to the contrary not- 'withstanding.

LIX. And be it further enacted, That it fhall not be lawful for the Court of Dire&ors of the faid Com- pany to appoint or send out to India a greater Number of Perfons, in the Capacity of Cadets or Writers, or in any other Capacity, than will be neceflary, in Addition to thofe already in India, to supply the proper ceffery.to fupply, Complement of Officers and Servants contained in the faid Lifts of their Eftablishments, according to fuch the Complement Returns of Vacancies as the respective Governments in India fhall transmit from thence to the faid Court of of the Establish- Directors.

LX. And be it further enacted, That no Perfon fhall be capable of acting, or being appointed or sent to India, in the Capacity of Writer or Cadet whose Age fhall be under fifteen Years, or thall exceed twenty- certain Age', &c, two Years, nor until the Perfon propofed, or intended to be fo appointed, fhall have delivered to the fand Court of Directors a Certificate of his Age, under the Hand of the Minister of the Parish in which he was baptized, or Keeper of the Regiftry of Baptifm of fuch Parifh; and if no fuch Regiftry can be found, an Affidavit of that Circumstance fhall be made by the Party himself with his Information and Belief that his Age is not under fifteen Years, and doth not exceed twenty-two Years: Provided nevertheless, That the faid Restriction fhall not extend to prevent the faid Court of Directors from appointing any Perfon to be a Cadet who fhall have been for the Space of one Year at leaft a Commiffioned Officer in his Majefty's Ser- vice, or in the Militia or Fencible Men, when embodied, and have been called into a&ual Service, or from the Company of Cadets in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, and whose Age shall not exceed twenty-five Years.

LXI. And, for preventing the Abuses which have formerly prevailed in the Collection and Receipt of the Revenues of the faid Territories and Acquifitions in India, be it further enacted, That every Perfon (being a British-born Subject) who is or shall be appointed or authorised to collect, manage, control, or receive the Rents, Duties, or Revenues, of and belonging, and due and payable to the faid Company in Iadia, thell, before he enters upon the Collection and Receipt thereof, take and fubfcribe the following Oath, which Oath the Chief Juftice, or one of the Puifne Judges of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Bengal, or the Mayor or other Magiftrate in any of the other Prefidencies or Settlements, or fuch other Perfon as fhall be deputed or authorized by any Order in Council of any of the faid Prefidencies in that Behalf, fhall and is hereby au- thorised and commanded to adminifter; and fuch Oath fo administered thall be recorded in the Supreme Court at Calcutta, or in one of the said Provincial or Mayor's Courts; (that is to fay,) "JA. B. do promife and fwear, That I will, to the utmost of my Endeavours, well and faithfully execut and difcharge the Duties of an Officer of Revenue, repofed in and committed to me by the United Company of Merchants of England trading to the East Indies; and that I will not demand, take, or accept, directly or "indirectly, by myself or by any other Perfon for my Ufe, or on my Behalf, of or from any Rajah, Leminder, "Talookdar, Polygar, Farmer, Renter or Ryot, or from any Perfon paying or liable to pay any Tribute, Rent, or Tax, to or for the Ufe of the faid United Company, any Sum of Money or other valuable Thing by way of "Gift, Prefent, or otherwife, over and above, or befides and except the actual Tribute, Rent, or Tax au- “thorized to be taken by and for the Ufe of the faid United Company; and that I will juflly and truly account "for, anfwer, and pay, all the Rents, Duties, and other Revenues and Sums of Money which shall come to my Hands, or to the Hands of any Perfon or Perfons in Truft for or employed by me, as an Officer of the "Revenues of the faid Company, unto the said United Company.

LXII. And be it further enacted, That the demanding or receiving any Sum of Money, or other valu- able Thing, as a Gift or Present, or under Colour thereof, whether it be for the Ufe of the Party receiving the fame, or for, or pretended to be for the Ufe of the faid Company, or of any other Perfon whatsoever, by any British Subject, holding or exercifing any Office or Employment under his Majefty, or the faid United Company, in the East Indies, thall be deemed and taken to be Extortion and a Mifdemeanor at Law, and
