He spent eight months undergoing institutional treatment and was discharged from the Addiction Treatment Centre on 10th January, 1973 and was followed up by after-care supervision for a year. His after-care superviso had tried to arrange him to re- side at a half-way house upon his discharge in order to keep him away from his former undesirable associates in Shek Kip Mei area. However, he failed to report to the half-way house nor had he contacted his after-care supervisor since his discharge.

He had,

as he disclosed, lived with a friend in Yu Chau Street and assisted in running an illegal business of writing "Tse-fa" lottery tickets in Shamshuipo area. He also had relapsed to addiction, spending about $10 a day on hercin.

According to a source of information, it was upon request of his friend with whom he lived that he had allegedly gone to give a helping hand in the confrontation with another gang by the end of February, 1973, in which the present offence was committed.

B. FAMILY COMPOSITION

Mother: CHAN Yu-chui, 45, remarried, a housewife and

occasionally doing washing work at various restaurants with about $15 a day.

Step-father: LAM Miu-ching, 70, casual assistant cook at

various restaurants with about $25 a day.

Usually, he worked for 15 to 20 days a month, owing to his advanced age.

The Prisoner's family occupies a standard resettlement cubicle at No. 171, Block 15, 5/F, Shek Kip Mei R/E, Kowloon, paying a monthly rental of $19. They have been living there for 13 years. It was only a small resettlement unit measuring about 10 ft. x 10 ft. A small cockloft was erected. The place looked quite congested but very tidily kept. Shek Kip Mei resettlement area was very densely populated and people living there mostly belonged to the working class with comparatively low income. Crime rate in this area was reportedly quite high.

D. EDUCATION

The Prisoner had eight years of schooling in Shek Kip Mei area. He studied from kindergarten class to primary 3 at a Primary School at the rooftop of Block 13, Shek Kip Mei R/E. In
