in a building near the building containing the flat in which the deceased was murdered. There was evidence that he was seen just outside the main gates of the building at which he worked between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the evening of the murder. He was sweeping the road.

There was also evidence from a lady who looked after Chan's small daughter that he normally returned home from work at about 4. 30 p.m. She could not remember whether this was the case on the day of the murder, but she said that there had not been any occasion on which he had collected his daughter before 2 p.m.

A co-tenant of Chan's at the place where he lived gave evidence that one day, at a time when the Police were making enquiries there, he came to her and told her that, if she should be asked questions, she should say that he had been cooking meals and looking after his baby. This witness said that she did not know what this was all about, but she told a policeman that "on the day" Chan had been cooking meals and looking after his daughter. She said that she did not know what day she was referring to. Another witness, who had known Chan for some years, said that in April 1972 he met

·Chan and had a conversation with him in which Chan said that there had been a murder in Chung Hom Kok and that the Police were troubling him. When the witness asked Chan why this was so, he replied that he had told a member of his family to lie.

Chan was interviewed by Police officers on a number of occasions between 17th March, when the murder was committed, and October, when he was charged. At an interview on 26th March, he made a statement in which he explained that on the day in question he left his place of work to go home at about 9.30 a. m., that, after arriving home, he looked after his daughter, that his wife came home for lunch, and generally accounted for the remainder of that day.
