General

18.

FU SHING Commune has a predominantly agricult-

ural economy, based on the growing of rice, which with two

harvests per year (double cropping), is by far the most

important crop. Subsidiary crops such as sweet potatoes,

peanuts, sugar cane, vegetables, green manure, fodder for

livestock, oil bearing seed crops and fruit are also grown

both collectively and in individual household allotments

(private plots).

Pigs, ducks and chickens are the principal live-

stock reared for food. They are also valued for the manure

they produce. Cattle are kept as draught animals rather

than for consumption. Sea fishing is carried out on a

small scale in DEEP BAY and fresh water fish farming in

inland ponds together with oyster farming in DEEP BAY are

important subsidiary collective enterprises.

Farming methods are still mainly based on

traditional practices but some 'modern' innovations are

tractors (on a limited scale), small, rudimentary pedal or

electrically operated threshing machines, manually drawn

rice transplanters, hand-guided cultivators and water pumps.

Production units still cannot rely upon as great a supply of

chemical fertilisers and insecticides as they would like and
