DEFENCE REVIEW - BRUNEI

1. Thank you for sending me a copy of your minute of 5 December. You will see from the attached note by the Head of DS11 that the MOD also have their eye on the problem. Incidentally, it also came up yesterday when a member of the French Embassy called on me (see my minute attached).

Perhaps it would be best if SWFD co-ordinated FCO views on this and dealt direct with DS11, though I hope Defence Department can be kept informed in case we have anything to contribute. It may be thought that the point which came up in my discussion with M de Beauvais about the effect on our position in Brunei of the reduction of our reinforcement capability might be of some further use.
