Thank you very much for your contributions yesterday to various papers on our defence effort outside NATO.

I shall be speaking from your briefs about consultations over the present Government's Defence Review at a meeting with the PUS this afternoon.
3. 1 attach a copy of the fly-sheet on the Defence Review as sent to the Planners last night. If you have any amendments to suggest, could you please let me know by telephone?

Your contributions to the major paper for an incoming govern- ment on our defence effort outside NATO were valuable and much appreciated, and I have embodied them in a draft paper which I have sent to the Planners. I attach extracts from the sections which conern your department. But I am afraid that the current paper is much too long for the purpose which it is intended to serve. I have therefore tried my hand at a shorter paper, drawing on your contributions. A copy of this is also attached. I should be very grateful to have any comments on it as soon as possible, if possible by lunch-time and in any case by 4 pm this afternoon.
