3. The present garrison consists of

There is provision for reinforcement by one battalionfrom the

Uited Kingdom and the possibility has been envisaged of providing

further reinforcement by bringing in all or part of the Gurkha

battalion at present stationed in Brunei, though the Brunei battalion

will be withdrawn if the recommendation in the defence review is

accepted.

The view of the Governor, in the light of military advice, is

that the minimum requirement would be met in either of the following

ways:

a. stationed forces of 6 major units at their present manned

strength (which in the case of 2 British battalions is below the

notional full strength) with some savings in support costs and

without a reinforcement capability.

The Governor prefers the f rst of these 2 options and we strongly

support this view. The retention of a recinforcement capability

will be the only justification for the retention of an East about
