DEFENCE REVIEW

1. Following the OPD meeting on 1 August the Steering Committee have been asked to produce a further paper for Ministers by mid-September. The Steering Committee set up a sub-committee to draft this paper.

2. At the first meeting of the sub-committee on 6 August the Ministry of Defence agreed to provide draft paragraphs as follows:

3.

(a) Cyprus

To study the current normal UK force levels, the manpower involved, their tasks and costs.

(b) Hong Kong

To define and cost for comparative purposes;

(i) the minimum garrison level without a

quick reinforcement capacity;

(ii)

the minimum garrison level with an acceptable reinforcement capability.

The Ministry of Defence have now sent us their first drafts and I should be grateful for your comments by close of play on 12 August.
