APPENDIX IV-Contd.
External Examinations
7. Arrangements are made by the Examinations Division, on behalf of numerous overseas educational and professional bodies, to hold their examinations in Hong Kong. The responsibility of the Director of Education is limited to the arrangement and super- vision of the examination halls, the receipt of entries and fees, the despatch of scripts, and related practical details. The total number of such examinations is approximately 140 per year. The most important, for the general public, are the London General Certificate of Education examination (about 19,000 candidates per year), the Test of English as a Foreign Language and Scholastic Aptitude Tests (about 10,000 candidates per year) and the London University External Degree examinations (about 250 candi- dates per year).
The Chinese University of Hong Kong Matriculation Examination
8. The examination is administered by the Chinese University of Hong Kong Matriculation Board consisting of a chairman who is the Registrar of the University, a secretary who is the Assistant Registrar (Exams.) of the University, and 20 members representing the Committees of Subjects relevant to the examination, the secondary schools, the Education Department and the University of Hong Kong.
9. The examination is primarily for university entrance purposes, but it is increasingly assuming the role of a public examination, i.e., for school leaving and employment purposes. Unlike the G.C.E. in U.K., the C.U.H.K. has no mutual understanding with overseas universities with regard to recognition of the examination.
10. There are different entry requirements. But the most common qualification for entry is that a candidate has gained in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (Chinese or English) Grade E or above in at least 5* subjects including Chinese and English at one and the same examination, and has subsequently studied a full course in a registered day school for at least 1 year taking a minimum of 5 subjects relevant to the Matriculation Examination.
11. To be eligible to enter the Examination, a candidate must therefore have taken a 5-year full secondary course plus 1 year Middle 6 in the case of Chinese middle schools or 1 year Lower Form 6 in the case of Anglo-Chinese secondary schools.
12. To fulfil the Matriculation requirements, a candidate must at one and the same examination pass in Chinese Language, English Language and three other subjects. There are additional faculty requirements.
13. As from 1974 entry fees will be $60 for each candidate offering five subjects and $10 for each additional subject in excess of five. With the increase in examiners' fees in 1974 the examination can still be self-financing.
Hong Kong University Advanced Level Examination
14. The examination is administered by a Board which is a standing committee of Senate; the Board which is principally composed of university representatives also in- cludes representatives from schools, the Director of Education and two members nominated by him.
* As from 1974 a candidate must gain in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination Grade E or above in at least 6 subjects including Chinese Language, Chinese Literature and English Lan- guage at one and the same examination.
