Brazil (Floods)

Mr. Ford asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Alfairs what messages he has sent to the Brazilian Government following the recent flooding and loss of life; if he will take steps to offer appropriate assistance to Brazil and if he will make a statement.

Mr. James Callaghan: A message of sympathy to the Brazilian Government has been sent on my instructions through Her Majesty's ambassador in Brasilia.

I have received a report from the ambassador about the loss of life and incidence of distress and have asked him for advice about the aid, if any, which the Brazilian Government may need. I will decide in the light of his reports what help we can offer.

Hong Kong (School Children)

Mr. Marks asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what percentage of children in Hong Kong are registered as pupils in private and public sector schools, respectively: and how many stay until the age of 16 years.

Mr. Ennals: In September 1973 there

were:

(a) $76,890 children enroled in public pri- mary schools and 146,689 children enrolled n prvate primary schools;

(b) 185,162 children enrolled in public and assisted secondary schools and 159.801 children carolled in private secondary school.

Of the primary age group -6 to 11- -- of 693,200 children. 576,625 or 95-6 per cent. are in primary schools, distributed as follows.

169 per cent, 78.7 per cent.

There are, however, children in primary age group in kindergarten and secondary schools. Similarly children of secondary school age may be found in primary schools.

Of the secondary age group-12 to 16 ----of 533,100 children, 255,516 or 479 per cent. are in secondary schools, distributed as follows:

22.2 per cent. 25.7 per cent.

Of the 16 year old age group of 101,300 children, there are 56,283–55-6 per cent. ---enrolled in schools of all types.

Chile (Arms Supplies)

Mr. Kinnock asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, in his review of existing con- tracts for supplying warships to Chile, he will pay particular attention to the geo- graphy of the country and the military importance of coastal sea routes in troop movements.

Miss Joan Lestor: Yes. These factors will be taken into account.

HOME DEPARTMENT

Dangerous Chemicals (Carriage by Road) 100. Mr. Spriggs asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his policy with regard to the transport of heavy loads of toxic chemicals, and other dangerous loads, by road transport ; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Summerskill: Regulations have been made under the Petroleum (Con- solidation) Act 1928 controlling the con- veyance by road of a wide range of dangerous chemicals, and it is my right hon. Friend's intention to extend these controls to toxic substances as soon $3 possible. In addition, there are arrango- ments for providing the emergency services with immedine advice on the hazards involved.

Lighting Restrictions (Jucidence of Crime)

Mr. Robert Cooke asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any statistics of the incidence of crims related to the lighting restrictions imposed in the carly part of 1974.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon : No.

Television Licences (Scotland)

Mr. Reid asked the Secretary of Stato for the Home Department what is the total annual revenue received from the Scottish sales of television licences.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon: £13 million in 1973.

Sports Grounds (Safety)

Mr. Dalyell acked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when be expects to introduce legislation on safety at sports grounds.
