6.

After her release from prison she was still not permitted to leave China until she eventually came out in 1973.

Miss Fung has expressed willingness to meet any Government official who might want to check her statements.

I feel strongly that in an appeal of this kind the case for the person concerned should be heard; I was surprised that the Director of Education had not apparently taken up the references which Miss Fung had given, and I trust that they will be considered together with these comments from the Rev Joyce Bennett and myself before H.E. the Governor is advised in regard to this appeal.

I will of course be very glad to keep in touch with you in regard to any further matters which may emerge in regard to this case.

As far as I know this is the first time an application from a teacher employed in one of our Anglican Schools has been turned down on these grounds; and I consider it a matter which affects our integrity if we are not consulted when matters like this come up.

I will be most grateful if you can help us in straightening

out this business.

Yours sincerely,

(Sgd.) Gilbert Baker

F.B. Williams, Esq.

Principal Assistant Colonial Secretary (S) Secretariat, Hong Kong
