Dear Mrs. Turner,

April 5th, 1974.

The

Thank you for your letter of April 3rd. Hong Kong Government cheres your concern for the welfare of animals and birds. It has takon steps to prohibit trude in endangered species and to ensure that the legal trade in live animals and birds is c niucted in as husono a manner as possible.

To this end, legislation has been enactol in Hong long which will incoso a much stricter centrol over tho trudo in live animals and birds by enabling the Director of 'griculture und Fisheries to lay down strict standards, whien vil have to be met before any licence is issued for this trade.

The legislation will also allow the Director to enforce a code of practice governin: the treatment of live animals and birds. The code requires high stendards of housing, a nagement and feeding; and the sc, regation of sick, vicious or incompatible species.

The hawking of animals and birds is now illegal

in Hong Kong.

There is also now legislation making it an offence to import or possess any of the cro.tures listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of .ild Fauna and Flora.

You mention a letter from a dealer in Hong Kong offering Chinese reptiles and amphibians to the director
