Dear Mr Boxall,

Thank you for your letter of 5th April. I have noted what you say about the controls which have been imposed on the trade in live animals and birds in Hong Kong, and will hope that these controls can be enforced to some effect.

I do, of course, appreciate the feelings of the Hong Kong Government as regards the delicacy of attempting to influence another Government's policies, but in the world-wide context of the conservation of wildlife I do not feel it is improper for any of us to do what we can to avert the catastrophe of altering the ecological balance of the planet on which we all depend.

I now enclose a photocopy of the letter mentioned in my letter of 3rd April. I am sorry for the delay in sending this to you but felt I must obtain Mr Durrell's permission before doing so as he is the person to whom the original letter was sent. I apologise for the poor quality of this copy of a photocopy, the quality deteriorates each time. Unfortunately I do not have the accompanying list detailing each species on offer, and As Mr Durrell is out of the country until September I have not been able to acquire it. However, in Mr Durrell's own words, it illustrated the severe nature of the problem; the number of species involved was very high.
