1. Mr Dalyell wrote to the Secretary of State for Trade enclosing a letter he had received from the Fauna Preservation Society. The Society are asking what progress has been made by our Embassy in Peking in finding out the measures taken by the Chinese Government on wildlife conservation. Mr Dalyell's letter was mislaid by the D.0.T. and they have only just forwarded it to Lord Goronwy-Roberts office for reply.
2. In our letter of 29 April to Mr Dalyell, we mentioned that the Ambassador in Peking had raised the problem with the Chinese authorities. The Chinese promised to look into the question.
Not unexpectedly, nothing has as yet been heard from them. However, in following up a specific enquiry about the Chinese giant salamander the Embassy have managed to elicit a fair amount of information about conservation measures in China. Unfortunately this does not include anything about the export and transportation of animals to Hong Kong and the Embassy were not able to obtain a list of protected species in China. But as Mr Furland says in paragraph 9 of his letter of 17 July he was lucky to get the information he did, and we are likely to obtain, at least in the near future, much more information than has already been given.
3.
I think therefore, we should reply to the Fauna Preservation Society on the basis of the information in Mr Fursland's letter and I accordingly attach a draft submission covering a draft reply to Mr Dalyell.
