work. It is the task of government to provide general information of this nature and it is appropriate that an overseas information unit preparing this material with a view to Europe's needs should form part of I.S.D. and work in close policy co-ordination with the Department of Commerce and Industry and the Colonial Secretariat. But the effective distribution and use of the material will be dependent on the co-operation of the T.D.C. and of their offices in Europe and particularly in Amsterdam. Subject to the formal agreement of the T.D.C., information items of a factual nature such as general features and photographs could be fed into their dis- tribution network as part of their output. Supplementary distribution would be carried out through personal contacts maintained by the government information officers stationed in Brussels, Frankfurt, Paris and possibly Rome and through the information services of British Embassies.

92. With regard to sponsored visits from Holland to Britain last year, the Embassy in the Hague had a mis of six persons for Category I visits (totally sponsored) and no limit on the Category II visits (partially sponsored). They are now planning to invite one Member of Parliament from each of the five major parties to London shortly. T.D.C.'s own visits from the area are well selected although too limited. On the press side Jos Hagers, correspondent for 'Haagsche Courant (which represents 17 newspapers with a syndicated circulation of million copies) was a particularly good choice for attendance at this year's 'Ready to Wear' Festival. Also the fact that she stayed on for an additional week to cover government stories (and was given a background briefing by the Governor personally) was an excellent example of shared effort between T.D. C. and I.S.D. which should be repeated on other suitable occasions. Jos Hagers is a well-intentioned intelligent and capable correspondent and would be worth inviting back on a return visit in the future.

93.

Another correspondent particularly worthy of note for a possible future invitation to Hong Kong is Eric Peereboom who is the economic editor of the daily paper "Het Parool". He is also the economic commentator for one of the Dutch television programme companies Avro/TV. He recently visited Japan to do a TV programme on the Japanese economy and it might be possible to persuade him to visit Hong Kong for a television feature. The television/broadcasting scene in Holland is very complicated. There are three sound and two television channels operated technically by Government, with the programme time allocated to eight broadcasting societies on the basis of the strength of their membership. Avro/TV is the most effective of these companies and a visit from their correspondent should be encouraged.
