In addition, we receive assistance from the other clerical and messengerial staff of the BTC for such work as the distribution of press releases, "Britain Trades" etc and film projection.
As mentioned above the Translator/Information Clerk post is a new one and Miss Ng took up her appointment only on 2 July. This was a significant step forward for our work because apart from stepping up our Chinese output to which we attach considerable importance we now have that little extra clerical help which should assist us to be more effective in a number of other directions. The section has been stretched almost continuously for the last eighteen months as the BTC's trade promotion work has intensified very considerably and there has been little slack to cover leave, sickness etc let alone to permit much needed improvements e.g. to the film library, radio etc. It is hoped that these will become practicable in the near future and that additionally the Information Assistant will be able to devote more attention to extending his contact with the Chinese media. He incidentally will be undertaking a three-week COI course later this
year which should pay considerable dividends in its impact on our small team.
