share the available advertising revenue. Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Ltd (the other existing station) and Rediffusion Television
are understood to be virtually subsidising their English channels with their Chinese channels, which clearly have a much larger audience, and the new station is expected to be something of a money spinner, despite an obligation to Government to broadcast several hours of educational television daily.
Press Conferences

The BTC holds press conferences fairly frequently. Generally they are intended more to try to publicise a trade event such as a visiting mission rather than to release "real" news or provide a forum for a visiting VIP whom the media really wish to meet e.g. Stirling loss or Lord Thorneycroft. Last year we may have spoiled the "market" to some extent by overdoing conferences for trade mission leaders who had not the personality or a good enough story or news to impart, and to preserve our credibility with the media we have tended not only to call conferences more sparingly in recent months but also make more careful preparations to try to put our message across. Business press conferences usually only rate the cub reporters, many of whom have difficulty in understanding all that is said (and yet never take up our offer to interpret for them). They are therefore apt to botch the story and we have learned the need for giving them their story ready-made in the form of a statement if at all practicable. When planning publicity arrangements for missions we now recommend a press conference only if the leader feels that he has a story to put over, and we ask for his statement well in advance for editing, duplicating and translating in time to issue at the conference.
