HKK 6/548/5 of 30 September. I found it most useful; to Ken Hanna too for the work that went into the draft. point of view it would be very helpful if we could continue the arrangement which you had with Tom Aston. Anything you could let me have on the political relationship too would be very valuable. I see no despatches and feel rather cut off from the outside world; there is a certain danger in getting too immersed in the technicalities of running a Trade Commission! I wish I was in a position to let you have a newsy reply, but I am only just beginning to get the feel of the place. No doubt I will have more to contribute as time goes on. 2. My early impression is that things are pretty quiet on the Britain bashing front and that this is not taken too seriously in any case, although there is undoubtedly very strong feeling on the hanging issue. Sterling raised its ugly head briefly and was firmly suppressed by Derek Jones (I enclose a copy of the Press report of his speech). Very little has appeared in the Press in recent weeks about the GSP. Sir Christopher Soames passed through here a week or two ago and the Governor and David Jordan spent a day with him on the Governor's yacht. I gather from David that this was a 'fence mending' exercise in view of the bad impression created when Sir Christopher last visited Hong Kong.

The Mass Transit negotiations seem to be dragging their feet and I think it likely that there will be a campaign in the Chinese Press for the project to be cancelled on the grounds that Hong Kong cannot afford it under present conditions. This certainly is the view taken by George Liu of the Standard and Alfred Hoh of Wah Kiu Wit Po.
