(ii) The total number of currency units required for the

range of transactions from $1 to $9 for:

(a) existing range of currency units;

(b) existing range of currency units plus

various new units.

Bearing in mind the binary optimum, these tables clearly indicate

that the introduction of a 20 r 25 cent coin and a $2 coin would reduce the number of coins in circulation, although it goes without

saying that such a reduction would not reach the level revealed in

the tables. The reason is that people do not always use coins in the most efficient way but are influenced by habit, by personal preferences for certain shapes and sizes, and by the popularity of particular coins - for example for use in parking meters or as gifts.

Choice of denominations

31.

With this ideal sequence of denominations in mind, we

considered the choice of denominations which would be most suitable

to Hong Kong's present and future needs.

32.

In that section of our report relating to the background to the Committee's appointment (paragraphs 5 t. 11), reference was made

to recent trends that have had a bearing on the coinage, viz. increases

in circulation, storage problems, rising costs, possible advent of vending

and other coin-operated machines. In the light of these trends we have

concluded that there is a need for an increase in the number of

denominations making up our current range of coins. Such an increase

was widely suggested by those organisations which were invited to

submit comments or suggestions to us. A summary of the suggestions

put forward is given below.
