Criticisms of the present coinage
22.
Two criticisms are made of our present coinage; they have
been reiterated in letters we have received.
23.
The first criticism, and the most widely held, is that the present one dollar coin is too large and too heavy in relation to its value.
24.
The second criticism of our coinage is that the five cent piece is too small and is now of little practical everyday use. This criticism is often coupled with the suggestion that it should be demonetized.
25.
We are in agreement with the first criticism but have
reservations with regard to the second.
26.
A third criticism has arisen following the announcement of the formation of the Committee. This is that there is a need to add new denominations to our existing range of coins.
With this, we agree.
