VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG TO THE UK
1.
The Governor has informed me (Hong Kong telno. 761 attached) that he has to return to the UK immediately as his mother is dangerously ill. Sir Murray MacLehose told me of this possibility when I was in Hong Kong last week and I agreed with him that, if he needed to come to the UK for this purpose leaving the Colonial Secretary in charge, he should simply inform me. Department's agreement, as required in Dependent Territories Departmental Practice, could be taken for granted.

The
I will meet Sir Murray at London Airport on his way through to Scotland but, unless any of the addressees of this minute think otherwise, will not suggest any other official meetings with him. We have over the last few weeks had extensive discussions in London and Hong Kong which have covered all outstanding matters of importance.
