ST PAULS HOSPITAL
5.1.
This development will take the form of an additional block of 250 beds with four operating theatres and an intensive care unit. One of the existing theatres will be converted to a CSSD whilst the other two at present in use will be adapted for out-patient purposes (a small instrument sterilising unit will be attached to the theatre block). It is anticipated that approval will be received shortly from the Ministry of Health and that building will commence in the Spring of 1975. Built-in equipment will be ordered at about the same time, but the ordering of movable items will not take place until the late autumn of next year: completion is expected about mid-1976.
5.2. At this stage the Committee is considering the question of the piped gas installation and the format of the CSSD. Despite the offer of an American firm to design the CSSD and to supply the autoclaves and operating tables, Sister Noel would like to consider British alternatives and immediate arrangements were made for her to be supplied with the necessary information. at local level by people other than the local agents who, in many cases, have not the capacity to go themselves and seek business: this is a general observation and not particularly pointed at Hong Kong).
5.3. Discussions were held on the subject of the plans for the new block and certain suggestions were made based on UK experience of work-flow etc. Questions were asked in relation to unbreakable crockery in use in UK hospitals, and DHSS experience with automated systems of CSSD, instrument washing machines, operating tables, the design of patient trolleys, equipment required for premature baby units, ultrasonic diagnostic aids for use in obstetrics etc. TIt
It is thought that the present average annual take-up of 10-20 infant incubators in the Colony, will be doubled within two years due to the provision of additional maternity beds.7
6.
PROPOSED SUN YAT SEN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
6.1. A site has been reserved for this proposed new private, and fully independent hospital at Shatin and the official approval is now awaited. In the first stage, the hospital will have 300 beds eventually increasing to 500. The intention is to combine preventive medicine in the form of a series of diagnostic tests, with care for chronic geriatrics, whilst at the same time, offering a wide range of specialised treatment for both paying patients and charity cases. The building will be on 12 floors and will include:
