Purpose of Visit

1.

The visit was primarily a liaison one to renew contact with the various establishments which offer City and Guilds schemes and examinations; to discuss further application of City and Guilds schemes particularly in the new Technical Institutes being constructed; and to establish the changes in technical education due to the absorption of the old Technical College into the new Hong Kong Polytechnic.

Hong Kong Polytechnic

2.

My programme in Hong Kong was organised by the Director of the Hong Kong Polytechnic, Mr. C. L. Old, who acts as the Local Secretary for all City and Guilds examinations in Hong Kong. Detailed arrangements were made by Mr. Lo King-Man, the Academic Secretary and his Assistant, Mr. Steven Ho.

3.

I spent my first day (6th February) in Hong Kong at the Polytechnic, the Board of which on 1st August, 1972 assumed responsibility for the work of the Hong Kong Technical College as the first stage in the development of the Polytechnic. The planned development of the Polytechnic is that by 1978 its student population should be 8,000 full-time and 20,000 part-time students. Prior to its take-over the Technical College, which was operated by the Government, had a student population of 1,576 full-time and 10,826 part-time students.

4.

The Polytechnic commenced with the eight departments taken over from the Technical College, viz;

Electrical Engineering

Mechanical Production and Marine Engineering

Building, Surveying and Structural Engineering

Textiles

Nautical Studies

Mathematics and Science

Commerce and Management

Industrial and Commercial Design
