Dem John,

HONG KONG MASS TRANSIT PROJECT

1. You may be interested to know that an article appeared. in the trade newspaper Nikkan Kogyo on 26 August describing the current state of play in the competition between the various consortia for this project. The article pointed out that although Hong Kong was a British colony, the Goverment of Hong Kong had repeatedly declared that in deciding to which consortium the contract would be awarded, it would not submit to pressure from the British Government.

2. The article made no judgements about the relative standing at this stage of the different consortia. It merely stated that during the remaining part of this month and next month representatives of the Hong Kong Government would be visiting London and Tokyo for further discussions.
