and command of spoken English,

Such an interview may

be followed by a requirement to take an oral or written

examination or a further course of training before a

certificate can be granted.

Similar arrangements would apply to Radio Officers,

adequate proof being required of technical competence. Manning and qualifications of ratings would be similar

to those required for the UK register both now and in the

future; Hong Kong is making arrangements to train to

these standards.

1

All safety requirements applicable to the Hong Kong register would be equivalent to those applicable both

now and in the future to the UK register. In particular:

Standards of crew accommodation would

conform with those required of ships registered in the UK. Arrangements would

be made to ensure that materials used in

crew accommodation were subject to type- testing for incombustibility and the like

on lines similar to those adopted in the UK. Similarly safety equipment on ships registered

in Hong Kong would be required to conform with

UK standards, the arrangements for type- testing in the country of manufacture being

broadly equivalent to those adopted in the UK. 111 Where existing ships whose equipment was well

supplied and in good condition were brought on to the register it would be the intention

to allow some period of grace before it was necessary to comply fully with Hong Kong/UK

Government standards.
