Most of the phenomena experienced with L.S.D. such as depersonal- isation, marked visual and temporal distortion and hallucinations have been observed when sufficiently large amounts of cannabis, especially hashish, have been taken. The long term effects of cannabis abuse are lassitude and psychosis.

Although more research is required into the long term effects of cannabis abuse, the results of what has been dono so far under the auspices of the United Nations indicate clearly that the consumption of the drug is harmful to the human body and personality, particularly when used regularly over an extended period. It is interesting to note that Indonesia which has had a problem of cannabis abuse for many years refuses to legalise its consumption for pleasure because of its known harmful long term effects. The 1972 'Interpol' General Assembly held in Frankfurt came out most strongly against any legalisation of cannabis having heard medical evidence and having regard to the worldwide knowledge and experience of the delegates.

Cannabis abuse in Hong Kong is on a very limited scale. Such small problem as exists is almost entirely an imported one centred upon young people from Europe and the North American Continent and those who associate with them. No grounds can be advanced in favour of legalisation in Hong Kong.
