to hand over to the Burmese Government a man who has been causing that Government much embarrassment, when in previous times they might have supported him against that Government.
However there
have been two other incidents which do argue that relations are getting better. The first of these was the departure from Thailand on 24 July of U Nu who has gone to the States to teach at a university. For years his presence in Thailand has been a source of annoyance to the Burmese and a barrier to the improvement of relations between the two countries. His departure can do nothing but good.
5. The second encouraging sign was the announcement by Air Chief Marshal Dawee that the Thai/Burmese General Border Committee will meet in Rangoon from 16-18 August. If this meeting takes place it will be the first meeting of the General Border Committee for five years and will represent a further cautious step further.
