Drugs search under the sea

POLICE have launched a massive search for raw opium worth more than $1.6 million, believed to be lying at the bottom of the harbour.

Drug-hunters believe at least six bags of raw opium were dumped into the sea by three men arrested by police on board a drugs-laden junk off Tsunwan yesterday.

The missing bags of opium are believed 10 be part of a consignment of 50 sacks and blocks of morphine seized by police.

Police yesterday seized 44 sacks weighing a total of 2,932 lb, and 486 lb of morphine base.

Their estimated value is $15.6 million.

The three arrested men are believed to have confessed to narcotics officers that they dumped sacks of drugs off Tsing Yi Island when their. 30-ft fishing junk's engine broke down.

The search for the missing raw opium started shortly after noon.

At least 10 frogmen from the Royal Navy and the Fire Service are combing the seabed.

About three police launches have been stationed in the vicinity to turn away passing junks and other vessels.
