TV FILMS ON HONG KONG

·

1 You asked what we or Hong Kong know about BBC plans for filming a documentary on Hong Kong. This was mentioned by Mr James Johnson MP when he called on Mr Amery on 9 August.

2. Neither we nor the Hong Kong Government Office in London. know of any definite plans by BBC TV to produce a film on Hong Kong. News Department say that it is extremely difficult to make general enquiries at the BBC without a more definite indication of the programme or producer concerned since they all operate independently and are fairly jealous of their own preserves.

3. There was also a rumour and press report recently that Granada TV were sending a "World In Action" team to Hong Kong with Mr Alan Ellis. This was mentioned by Mr Ellis in a telephone conversation with the Overseas Police Adviser. Mr Ellis has since denied this suggestion both to the Hong Kong Government Office in London and in a personal letter which he has written to the Commissioner of Police in Hong Kong. Granada TV have also told the Hong Kong Government Office that they have no plans at the present concerning a film on Hong Kong. Hong Kong, who apparently know nothing themselves, made enquiries to the Hong Kong Government Office in London. They are being informed of Granada's denial.
