Hong Kong hanging call
THE HONG KONG goverament's recent decision to hang Cidnese Dan for murder has prompted a demand for capital punishment to replace the present practice of reprieve for convicted killers in the colony, writes Richard Hughes.
It is the first time in six years that a reprieve has been refused by the Governor. The convicted man has now appealed to the Queen, The Chinese urban and legislative councillors are ΠΟΥ insisting that hanging is neces- sary to curb the sharp rise in mur- der and violence. They are now trying to gather one million sig- natures on a petition supporting hanging.
Meny lawyers and liberals argue that Hong Kong should follow Britain's example and abolish the death sentence. The Queen's intervention would provoke pro- tests from the Chinese. Death for murder has been a traditional Chinese practice.
