RAINY days and Sundays and for this harbour watcher a Pollard made an apt resting place to see the junks go by.

Massive move to retain hanging

MORE than 200 organisations have been asked to help in a million- signature campaign to maintain hanging in Hongkong.

Campaign organiser and newly appointed Urban Councillor Mr Wong Shiu-cheuck, told the MAIL the move was to draw the "real" public opinion from the silent majority.

Signature sheets will be distributed to the public through kaifong associations and other community organisations.

A public seminar will be held on May 21.

Mr Wong said they were not saying all criminals should be hanged... "but we think capital punishment should not be abolished.”

Unhappy

The result of the signature campaign would be a strong statement to tell Government and the Queen of the "real" public opinion, he said.

"Opimons against hanging at the moment come mainly from the English speaking community and they can't be taken as the wishes of all the people here.

Mr Wong said it is hoped a committee for the campaign will be set up at the May 21 public seminar.

"We hope to let the authorities know how many people are in favour of hanging by the end of next month.”

The Urban Councillor said he was confident the response from the public would be enthusiastic because it was a matter of restoration of law and order. People could no longer remain silent and passive, he said.
