3. Nevertheless, the relevant file still contains a statement that we will discuss with the new Chief Justice
his views of the calibre of the present Magistrates' Bench and District Court Bench. It follows from this that
it would be helpful to have a word with the Chief Justice to obtain his impression on that point and, if he thinks that there is room for improvement in selection and/or
of mequientes training, to start him thinking about:
(a)
(b)
what improvements in salary and conditions would attract younger men (and from my own experience of recruiting there is no doubt that young men with
families, and Mr Roberts says the need is for young men, are put off by the prospect of having to go into hotels for a considerable time after arrival); and
"acclimatisation and familiarisation" procedures
for new magistrates.
I gather that new magistrates
receive an introductory bundle of paper which
includes certain High Court decisions and
directions. Is something more needed?
