Short title.

A BILL

To

ANNEX A TO XCR(73)90

Amend the District Court Ordinance.

Enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice

and consent of the Legislative Council thereof.

This Ordinance may be cited as the District Court

(Amendment) Ordinance 1973.

Amendment of section 36, (Cap. 5.)

2. Section 36 of the principal Ordinance is amended

by deleting "five years" wherever the words occur and

substituting "seven years".

Explanatory Memorandum.

The great increase in the amount of serious crime

during the past few years has imposed severe burdens on the

Supreme Court and the District Court.

It is therefore proposed that some of the more

serious cases now tried in the Supreme Court should be tried

in the District Court. In order to enable the District

Court to deal adequately with such cases this Bill increases

the maximum sentence which may be imposed by a District

Judge from 5 to 7 years.

Attorney General.
