A number of newspapers continued to show their interest in the crime problem. During the week under review, they commented on the Fight Crime Exhibition held in City Hall recently and the forthcoming Fight Crime Campaign. The papers are:

Tai Po (3.5.73)

Wah Kiu Man Po (3.5.73) Sing Tao Jih Po (5.5.73)

Hong Kong Times (5.5.73)

Kung Sheung Daily News (6.5.73)

New Life Evening Post (6.5.73) Nam Wah Man Po (6.5.73)

Sing Tao Jih Po (7.5.73)

Wah Kiu Man Po, Hong Kong Times and Kung Sheung Daily News favoured the exhibition and encouraged their readers to go and visit it.

Commenting on the coming Fight Crime Campaign, Fai Po, Sing Tao Jih Po, Hong Kong Times, Kung Sheung Daily News, New Life Evening Post and Nam Wah Man Po agreed that the general public should help the police to make the campaign

a success.

"Some people are reluctant to help the police. That is why the criminals dare to ignore the law," said Nam Wah Man Po. The paper reiterated that it is the responsibility of all citizens, kaifong associations and other social organisations to help fight crime whenever and wherever possible.'

Fai Po pointed out that the general public are willing to give their fullest support once the Government has made up its mind to wipe out crime.

Hong Kong Times said that we cannot fight crime just by propaganda, meetings and other forms of activities.

"If there is no concrete work done, the campaign will never succeed, even if the general public are willing to support it," the paper said.

It pointed out that: (I) The authorities concerned should realise that the target of the Fight

Crime Campaign is not "lap sap chung" but criminals. It is impossible to move these villains by a song or two. They should be punished heavily.

(II) In order to make the campaign a success, the Government should initiate

the general public into the fight against criminals and the police should try their best to bridge the gap of misunderstanding between themselves and the general public.

14.

(III) Publicity and awards are necessary for the campaign. The appointment of the Information Secretary to head the campaign shows that the Government has given its proper emphasis on publicity. An award system is also very necessary so as to encourage more citizens to help.

Kung Sheung Daily News proposed that the Government should try to encourage more youngsters to join the work of the Fight Crime Campaign. It pointed out that since the main target of the campaign is youth, the leaders for the Fight Crime Campaign should not be limited to older people.
