VISIT OF MR JORDAN, DIRECTOR OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
1.
It has been customary for some years for talks to be
held between senior Hong Kong officials (particularly from
the Commerce & Industry Department) and UK officials on a
variety of subjects but almost invariably covering textiles
and allied commercial subjects. These talks have usually
been very informal and chaired by a DTI Under-Secretary.
They have mostly taken place when Mr Jordan or his
predecessors in the office have been in Europe for GATT or
other meetings.
2. In his letter to Mr Wilford of 8 October Mr Jordan has
w/2 told us that he suggested to Mr Denman that the latter might
chair a meeting at the beginning of December (now advanced
to Friday 30 November). Mr Jordan also suggests that we
might think that it would be preferable for the FCO to
chair such a meeting.
3. Earlier contact with Mr Denman showed that the latter
had not made any necessary arrangements and I understand
has still not done so. Sir D Watson has said he would be
prepared to chair such a meeting. Whilst Mir Jordan clearly
would welcome a meeting chaired by Sir D Watson this might
