Curbs sought on Far East textiles

The EEC Commission is being urged by Comitextil, the co- ordinating committee for the textile industries of the EEC, to implement measures against im- ports from Far Eastern coun- tries.
Concern at the rising level of imports to the EEC from Far Eastern countries as a result of bilateral agreements between the United States and Asian countries has been raised by Comitextil in a communiqué to the commission.

the Figures produced by organization show that within the overall growth in imports from the Far East, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hongkong recorded substantial increases in volume, reflecting the deflec- tion of exports away from the United States as a result of the agreements negotiated between the American Government and those countries.
Large increases were also re- corded by Macao and Singapore in percentage terms, totalling 177 per cent and 207 per cent respectively.
In its representations to the
Comitextil has emphasized the importance of measures to restrict the rapid growth in imports from these areas, and has also stressed the need for a genuine Common Market in textiles for the indus- tries of the enlarged Com. munity.
The organization has also underlined its support for an international multi-fibre agree- ment covering both natural and synthetic fibres, providing that it is effective.
This approach is very much in line with the policy which the has advocated both in Comitex- British Textile Confederation til discussion and in submission to the British Government.
