The Director of Commerce and Industry presents his
compliments to the Consul General of the Federal Republic
of Germany und has the honour to refer to the trade in
certain textile products betwoon Hong Kong and Gemaany.

Following the Director's (Mr. D.ll. Jordan's) visit to
Bonn in December, 1972, when ho was notified informally of
the concern of the Government of the Federal Republic of
Gormany over increasing non-cotton textile imports from
Fong Kong, the Government of Hong Kong has been expecting
full #otails of the alleged domaga being caused by cuch
importo to tho Gomi077 domestic inductry, no desonstrated
by recent production, consumption and import statistics.
To duto no such details have been received.
3. It has accordingly occurred to the Government of long
Kong that the need to formulate a common commercial policy
on non-cotton textiled within the (30 may be inhibiting tho
Government of the Federal Republic of Germany from saking
any more formal approach in this matter at the prosent time.
4. Boing conscious of the need to maintain stable
conditions for, and orderly development of, trade between
the Federal Ropublic of Germany and Hong Kong, the Government
of Hong Kong has reviewed its oxport atatistics and noted
significant increases over the past year in the exports of
certain Hong Kon; origin textiles to the Federal Republic of
Germany. In particular it has been noted that the increasod
trodo hac occurred mainly in the woven polyester-cotton garnoat
Goctor.
