RECORD OF A MEETING BETWEEN THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER SECRETARY

OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS AND MR P C WOO

AT THE FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE ON FRIDAY 14 SEPTEMBER

AT 11.00 AM

Present:

Mr Anthony Royle, MP

Mr R B Crowson

Mr M RJ Guest

Mr P C Woo

(Senior Unofficial Member of Legislative Council, Hong Kong)

1. Mr Woo asked if Her Majesty's Government could do anything

to help Hong Kong settle her problems with the EEC.

Mr Royle

said that this question had been discussed in detail with the

Governor in the last few days. He understood Hong Kong's

problems fully and even though there were wider considerations

of British interest involved, we would do all we could for long

2. Iir Woo then referred to difficulties in Hong Kong over

Anglo/Hong Kong relations. He expressed his gratitude for all

that Mr Royle had done on Hong Kong's behalf while he had been

the Minister responsible in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office,

but implied that otherwise few people took much interest in Hong

Kong. Mr Royle asserted that Hong Kong, in fact, had many

friends in this country and pointed out the considerable number

of important visitors to Hong Kong in the last few years.

/Hong Kong's

Hong Kong's intelligent policy of cultivating such people had

paid dividends and there were now many people in the Government,

the House of Commons and Whitehall who could be counted as

friends of Hong Kong.
