CONFIDENTIAL

STERLING AGREEMENTS:

HONG KONG

1. I telephoned the Governor, as arranged, about the Treasury's

Press Notice today on sterling. I explained that we were proposing

to inform Hong Kong that we had got in touch with him. He agreed

with this and asked us to convey a message indicating his willing-

ness to take the matter up during his talks in London next week

on the basis of such briefing as Hong Kong provide.

He also

asked that we should make arrangements to get the text of the

Press Notice and the message to the Hong Kong Government to

Mr Haddon Cave, who, as ill luck would have it, is already on his

way back to ilong Kong. HKIOD have all of this in hand.

2. I emphasised to Sir Murray Maclehose that we were, of course,

at his disposal between now and his coming into the office for

talks next week.
