The article will presumably take the story up
to the period covered by Gary Catron's recent article in the China Quarterly. period, and I suppose that insofar as all this will be a revelation it could prove mildly embarrassing. I do not know what has already been published on this period that is in any way authoritative. reactions ranged from disbelief that H M G could have entertained such dastardly thoughts, to the narrow but Taipanly view, that "we always knew that Britain would never stand up for Hong Kong's interests."
