HMG to honour these assurances. One of them was that

after entry HMG would seek to mitigate discrimination

against Hong Kong. There would be serious political

repercussions if the UK were to discriminate against

that the question of UK preferences in Hong Kong could

come up. An example was the bus franchise where

operators were required to use British buses. At

present something between 1,000 and 1,500 new buses
