CRAWLEY NEW TOWN
Leave hotel by coach with Miss Maclaurin who will accompany the viaitors during their stay in London.
Arrive at the Commission for New Towns, Broadfield, Crawley, Sussex.
CRAWLEY, some 30 miles south of London, was designated in 1947 as one of the first of Britain's new towns (by August 1972 there were 32 new towns at various stages of development). One of several new towns designed to relieve overcrowding in London, Crawley is managed by the Commission for the New Towns, a government- appointed agency. The town's population - 9,500 in 1947
9,500 in 1947 - has reached 70,000, and further expansion is in progress. The designated area covers roughly 6,000 acres, and no part of the residential area is more than a mile from open country- side.
