CALL BY MR HILTON CHEONG-LEEN
1.
Mr Hilton Cheong-Leen, who will be in London between 24
and 26 May, has asked if he may pay a courtesy call on Mr Royle.
2. Mr Cheong-Leen, Chairman of the Civic Association, was
first elected to the Urban Council in Hong Kong in April 1957
and is now Vice Chairman of the reconstituted Council. The
Governor appointed him an unofficial member of the Legislative
Council on 1 May. This is the first time that an elected
member of the Urban Council has been appointed to Legco.
Mr Cheong-Leen remains at the same time a member of the Urban
Council.
3. Mr Hilton Cheong-Leen called on Mr Royle in April 1972.
A report of the meeting sent by Mr Laird to the Colonial
Secretary is attached.
4.
The Governor has said that he sees no harm in granting
an interview if this is convenient to Mr Royle (Hong Kong tele-
Flag gram No 488 attached). I recommend that Mr Royle should see
Mr Cheong-Leen if he is free; but 25 May is a holiday and 26
May is a Saturday, so 24 May would be the only day.
