PARLIAMENTARY VISIT TO THE SERVICES IN HONG KONG 12th to 17th September 1973
The outline programme forwarded with your letter 8024/20/HQBF dated 12th April as amended by your signal LDD 0823302 JUL was agreed at a meeting held by US of S (RAF) on 17 July for the Members participating in the visit. Detailed planning may now proceed on this basis.
2.
Brief personal notes on the members of the party are attached. The leader is Miss Betty Harvie Anderson, who should be given precedence over the remaining six members at all times. The escorting officer is Squadron Leader T.H. Whittingham of Ministry of Defence Ops (0) 3a (RAF). However, you should note:-

that Miss Anderson may leave Hong Kong over the week-end before the final de-briefing meeting to enable her to make a short visit to Peking. We shall not know the details of her private arrange- ments for China for another few days but, on the assumption that she does withdraw on the Saturday or Sunday, US of S (RAF) has said the Earl of Cork and Orrery will take over as Acting Leader for the remainder of the Hong Kong visit. We will signal you about any changes as soon as possible.
b. Mr. Jack Ashley is completely deaf. He has considerable lip reading ability however and takes part in discussions. Although he would not wish any special steps to be taken on his behalf we suggest that his disability is remembered during formal presentations in so far as the speaker could try to face Mr. Ashley as much as possible and that during any informal discussions with him a somewhat slower speech rate and more distinct lip movements would help considerably.
Travel to Hong Kong will be by the following 46 Group Scheduled services, except that timings (all local) will be confirmed early August when the September schedules have been drawn up :-
