LABOUR PARTY DELEGATION VISIT TO VIETNAM
Mw hard yellow,
1. Mr. Royle discussed the visit with Mr. Callaghan, Mr. Mikardo and Mr. McNally on 31 January.
2015/2
2. As far as Saigon was concerned the delegation said that they assumed that they were staying with the Ambassador. They hoped that the Mission could provide an interpreter if the Vietnamese were not doing so. As for Hanoi, the party would be happy to see the Consul-General. If it were not possible for him to meet them on arrival they hoped he would be able to call on them at their hotel. In Vientiane they had been invited to dinner by the Prime Minister and intended to accept.
You may wish to discuss where they will be staying with Mr. Mcally who seemed unclear on the subject. They would like help with interpreting here too.
3.
The delegation were happy with the arrange - ments which were being made for them in Hong Kon¿s though. in view of the long flight, they might wish to cancel arrangements made for them on the evening of their arrival. Since it is Mr. Callaghan's first visit to the Colony, Mr. Royle hopes that it might be possible for the Governor to arrange a helicopter trip on the afternoon of the second day of their stay.
4. The delegation will be staying at the Puking Hotel in Peking. Mr. Royle thinks it would bc appropriate for the Ambassador to meet them on arrival and for the Mission to provide an interpreter. As for Moscow, Mr. Roylc had the impression that the party did not want to have any contact with the Embassy. They reluctantly agreed however that it would be appropriate for our Chargé d'Affaires to meet them on arrival.
